How it flies

A wing works better in water.

Water is about 800 times denser than air. A wing in water makes the same lift as a wing in air at a fraction of the speed and a fraction of the area. That is the whole idea. TERNE carries two wings on three struts, and once they are moving fast enough, they lift 2.4 tons of boat clear of the surface.

    Below 16 knots. The wings are just drag.

    Lift climbs with the square of speed, so at low speed the foils do nothing useful and cost a little. The boat sits in the water like any other boat.

    At 16 knots. The hull leaves the water.

    Lift passes the weight of the boat and the hull rises until the wings find the depth where lift and weight balance. Take-off takes a few seconds and you feel it once.

    Above 16 knots. Only the struts are wet.

    Instead of dragging eight meters of hull through the water, the boat drags three struts and two wings. Drag falls by about 80 percent. The range comes from that, not from a bigger battery.

Fully submerged foils are not self correcting. Nothing about the shape wants to stay level, so the boat holds its own height and trim by measuring where it is and moving the foils to suit, many times a second. A hull is stable and slow. A foil is fast and needs to be flown. That is the trade, and it is why foiling boats waited for cheap sensors rather than for better wings.
